This week saw an attack against an Egyptian military post near the border with Libya and Sudan. The attack killed 21 Egyptian border guards and destroyed a weapons storage facility. Although Egyptian security officials said the perpetrators were smugglers, Cairo later claimed that they were terrorists. The Egyptians also asserted that the operation was planned from military camps on the Libyan side of the border that were being run by the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood. The attack prompted the joint Libyan-Sudanese forces that are officially responsible for security in the area, and headed by the military council in Kufra, to announce a state of high alert.
