On 3 December, UN Envoy to Libya Ghassan Salame met with Khalifa Haftar in Cairo where he said they discussed the importance of elections for Libya’s future. The two men also discussed efforts to combat terrorism, the current economic crisis, and the recent Cairo meetings between Libyan National Army (LNA) officials and their counterparts from western Libya to reunite the Libyan armed forces. Salame also reportedly met with House of Representatives (HoR) president Ageelah Saleh in Cairo.

The Libyan National Army (LNA) continues to patrol the Oil Crescent and fortify its presence in key locations around Ras Lanuf in anticipation of an attack by forces from the Magharba tribe, There are reports that such an incursion might have the backing of the Government of National Accord (GNA). Two Mig-21 jets were mobilised to Ras Lanuf port last week and rocket platforms were set up.

In western Libya, forces connected with High Council of State (HCS) president Abdurrahman Swehli and deputy prime minister of the GNA Ahmed Metig are reportedly joining forces with former hardliners and allies in Ajdabiya for a new assault on the Oil Crescent and Tripoli in the event that both men are marginalised in the political reshuffle that is to take place under UN supervision.
