On 2 June, the Libyan National Army (LNA) said that it was prepared to open the Sirte coastal road in a meeting of the 5+5 Joint Military Commission (JMC) attended by the Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Jan Kubis. The Director the LNA’s Moral Guidance Department, Khalid al-Mahjoub, confirmed that the LNA was ready to implement all the provisions of the Geneva Ceasefire Agreement, including the opening of the coastal road, but they were waiting on the Government of National Unity (GNU) to negotiate with western armed groups. Mahjoub said that armed groups in the west were demanding huge sums of money in exchange for opening the road, accusing them of ‘blackmail’.
On 5 June, GNU Prime Minister Abdul Hameed Dabaiba and Deputy President of the Presidential Council, Abdullah al-Lafi, attended a graduation ceremony at Misrata Air Defense College. During the ceremony, Lafi is reported to have made an address which called for the need to unify Libya’s military institution to achieve stability.
