Following on from Benghazi’s ‘Bloody Friday’ last week when ten people including two youth peace activists were shot dead, there have been more targeted assassinations in Benghazi this week. Although the majority of victims continue to be members of the security services, more civil society activists have also been targeted. On 22 September local campaigner, Ali Al-Misrati, was shot dead outside the Shebna Mosque. Two days later 22 year old Izzadine Al-Badri, another civil society activist, was shot dead in the Ben Younis area of the city.

It is clear, therefore, that anyone speaking out against the militias in the city is at risk of death. All this is creating a climate of panic and fear in the city that is struggling to function amidst the violence. This situation arose as part and parcel of Libya’s civil war in Benghazi and Derna, and then later enveloped Sirte.
