On 1 October, the commander of the al-Bunyan al-Marsous forces, Adel Boushema, told Italian media that forces patrolling south of Sirte had recently identified “suspicious terrorist movements.” Boushema claimed the recent spate of US Africa Command (US AFRICOM) airstrikes targeting ISIS in southern Libya “were unsuccessful and did not limit the activity of the terrorist organisation.” The military commander indicated that GNA aligned force had coordinated with LNA forces to undertake patrols south of Sirte, but had stopped and were not continuing after the LNA’s campaign to capture Tripoli on 4 April “giving the Islamic State the opportunity to move to fill the military in the open desert south of Sirte.”
